Baja Dogs Sterilizations continued to bring free sterilization campaigns to La Paz residents in July, with 139 sterilizations completed this month. Two mini campaigns, 1 large campaign and 75 redeemed vouchers brought our total to date this year to 1,077 sterilizations completed, with a running grand total of 5,850 sterilizations completed to date. As the heat has intensified this summer, it has become more difficult to find locations to hold our large campaigns. These campaigns are usually held at a local school. Unfortunately, with schools closed for the summer, we were not able to find a school location to hold the main campaign. However, we were able to secure the event hall we have used in the past for campaign events, but with a cost of $2,000 pesos to pay for the air conditioning we need to keep the pets and our volunteers and attendees safe in this heat. Thankfully, we were able to recoup the majority of this expense through $1,436.20 pesos in donations from attendees. Attendance was down, however, with only 33 out of 50 appointments kept.
Due to these challenges, we decided not to hold a large campaign in August, and plan to hold 4 mini campaigns instead. Our "mini" campaigns are proving to be highly targeted and effective. They are typically organized by a local community volunteer and held at a resident's home, where we have electricity, water and a cool place for the vets to perform the surgeries and for the dogs to recover. These mini campaigns result in anywhere from 15-30 dogs sterilized from surrounding homes, and target the communities and residents who need our services the most.
We will likely continue doing the same in September, as the summer heat typically lasts here in La Paz until mid-October.
